one of my favorite things about the pokemon universe is how the humans are esp. the bad guys
like mob boss giovonni can pull out a glock and waste my 10 y/o ass but he doesn’t he just accepts that i knocked out his cat and hands me money
I have my own theory that humans in the Pokemon world don’t even have a concept of direct violence. They settle all disputes through Pokemon battles, but also a human without pokemon is entirely helpless. This might lend its self further to the notion that humans can’t venture outside of towns without bringing trained pokemon to protect them. Like, can Pokemon world humans even throw a punch? I think the notion of humans ever directly using violence against one another without pokemon involved is something they can’t even think of.
In one of the movies ash just straight up clocks lucario
ash is innovative in a world where humans can’t punch
*steeples fingers* okay so I know this is a humorous fun joke but like…
Let’s think about this for a moment.
Mob Boss Giovanni probably has a gun. Given the level of technological development in pokemon’s universe it’s very unlikely that nobody invented gunpowder or ever thought to put it together into a weapon, or that Giovanni would procure one.
Let’s also assume the average ten-year-old bright-eyed pokemon trainer is not wearing a bulletproof vest, or has particularly impressive gun dodging abilities.
Giovanni shoots child, Giovanni probably dies immediately.
Wizards have the same trust in magic that software designers have in software, which is to say, almost none at all.
“Are you fucking kidding me I worked in a reagrent shop for a few years I don’t trust any of that stuff. Who the hell knows what other components are in the ashes.”
“Yeah I was in the circle that made Alston’s Divine Circle of Teleportation. There’s some pretty nasty corner cases you can get into but the headmaster published it without us. I just take ships. It’s way safer.”
“I call bullshit on that Necromancer channeling spirits of loved ones. What did he say he was using? ‘Medium Conduit Ruinic Circles’? That’s just a bunch of buzzwords slapped together, and they don’t even interact with each other.”
“I’ve been looking at this scroll all morning and I’m 90% sure that the scribe didn’t even look at the standard for pyromancies.”
“Help Desk, this is Gloriline, what did you fuck up this time?” *indistinct vocals* “Dave, I’ve seen the news, and, frankly, I can see the ash cloud from here. You paid for extended support, not enabling support.”
“Have you tried closing your spellbook and then opening it up again?”
if youve never physically been in the presence of like, a real live wolf, and you probably wont get the chance to, heres some stuff about them you should know
a wolf’s fur is so unbelievably thick that you can get like, your whole hand into it while petting. and then you can keep going
wolves are a lot bigger than you think they are. think about how big you think a wolf is then just like double that
they dont really smell like dog but they DO smell and youre not going to be able to figure out if its a good smell or not
a wolf really wants to lick the inside of your mouth. he will not stop trying to lick the inside of your mouth at any cost, and generally speaking you need to press your lips together kind of tightly when he approaches your face so that he doesnt worm his damn tongue in there to give you what he thinks is an appropriate greeting
a wolf doesnt really want to look at you while you pet him but he wants you to pet him. hes embarrassed
if a grown ass wolf decides to lay down on you, you just have to deal with it and thats your life now
young wolves, much like young dogs, are overwhelmingly goofy and stupid. a teenage wolf will see your very fragile, very human shoulder and go “i can probably step on that with my full weight” and then he will do it
letting a wolf eat out of your hand is actually not remotely frightening, and youll want to do it all day
So I know I make a lot of posts about Chara’s backstory, motivations and personality, but throwing all that aside, one thing about Chara’s fanon portrayal that’s really bugged me is how against the message of the murder route it is.
It’s pretty clear that the murder route is anything but promoting murder. From that plant in MTT Resort that’s “judging you for your sins” to Sans’ dialogue to, ironically, Chara’s confrontation at the very end. The moral is pretty clear: even if you think you’ll face no repercussions, bad things are still bad things. Don’t just do things because you can. You might hurt someone.
…which brings us to this.
Ignoring what Chara’s personal motivations might be, Toby’s intention is pretty clear. Up until this point, you, the player, were playing a game that could be reset at any time. Knowing this, you decided to kill everyone, just to see what would happen. You could always undo it at the end, with no negative effects on your save file. Right?
Chara completely decimates that. They call you out to your face, erase the world and your game with it, and only agree to bring it back if you “sell them your soul” (making it impossible to ever get the true ending again.) A bit extreme, maybe, and completely unexpected. And if you’ve named “Chara” after yourself, it’s even more creepy, isn’t it? Your own conscience is calling you out.
Of course, the fandom distorts this, because there’s no clear “bad guy” in Undertale. Flowey is the antagonist, but he (as Asriel) apologizes at the end. Chara seems to be a minor character at first, but then they appear out of nowhere, calling themself a “demon” and taunting you, and then erasing the world to punish you for your crimes. At the same time, other than putting you in time-out for ten minutes and taking away your toys, they really don’t do much of anything bad except for make a few edgy comments in red text with a black background, and are rude to you a couple of times. Despite this, they’re the closest the murder run offers to an antagonist, besides Sans.
So all this boils down to this: Flowey is the antagonist of the pacifist route, and there’s a common assumption that Chara’s the antagonist of the murder route. But need I remind you of who did all of that killing?
That’s right. The antagonist is you. And you still think you’re above consequences…don’t you? =)
